Junior High Staff
Matt Eckel - Junior High Teacher
Matt started teaching in SCMS’s Jr. High in 2016. Matt earned his Clear Credential, Secondary Education degree (University of California, Los Angeles) and dual Bachelors’ degrees in English Textual Studies and Television, Radio, and Film (Syracuse University). He was inspired to learn about Montessori education through his experiences teaching in East Los Angeles and Compton, where he observed that “people learn at different rates, in different ways, people learn by sharing, people learn by DOING.” At SCMS, he enjoys watching the students “blossom into compassionate, self-directed citizens and critical thinkers.”
Originally from Norristown, PA, Matt currently lives with his wife, his baby son, and his extended family in MN. For fun, he plays “Rock’n’roll” music and basketball, and pursues photography. Matt’s favorite board game is Settlers of Catan, his favorite movie is The Blues Brothers, and he is a fan of Bob Dylan, James Brown, The Stones, and The Boss. If he could travel anywhere in the world, it would be to Mexico and Guatemala to visit the Mayan ruins.
